Which reefs the boats go to
The outer reef is not one place. Each operator holds moorings at particular reefs, and the listing usually names them: Ocean Freedom goes to the Wonder Wall on the edge of Upolu Reef and to Upolu Cay, Divers Den to two of Norman, Saxon and Hastings reefs, Silverswift to three sites that have included Thetford and Pellowe reefs, and Sunlover and Reef Magic tie up at pontoons at Moore Reef. The half-day boats go wherever the skipper judges best on the day. Green Island and Fitzroy Island are different again: islands close to the coast, each with a fringing reef you can reach from the beach.
What that means for you: the full-day boats reach the coral and the visibility the outer reef is known for, and they visit two or three sites, so a poor patch at one is made up at the next. That is why a full day is the default pick, and why Ocean Freedom’s longer time at the reef is worth paying a little more for than the cheapest full days.

Who should book what
Pick by the person who is least keen on deep water:

Check dates →Moore Reef Pontoon
Semi-sub, glass-bottom boat, observatory and a waterslide on a fixed platform.
See this trip →Half-Day Snorkel

Compare snorkel trips →Prices are GetYourGuide's US-dollar starting prices per adult, checked October 2026; they change by date and season, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
Divers have the widest choice: Silverswift is built for diving and allows up to three certified dives in a day, Divers Den moors at Norman, Saxon and Hastings reefs, and for more than a day there are two- and three-day liveaboards from Cairns. If nobody in your group wants to get wet at all, a scenic flight over the reef shows its scale better than any boat.
Where the boats leave from
Almost everything leaves from Marlin Marina on the Cairns waterfront. Ocean Freedom, Passions of Paradise and Reef Magic board at the marina by the Reef Fleet Terminal at 1 Spence Street; Sunlover checks in at its counter inside the terminal and sails at 10:15 am for Moore Reef; Reef Adventures has its office on Finger B, next to its boats. Reef Experience runs a free pickup from city hotels. The island ferries to Fitzroy Island and Green Island leave from the same marina. If you are staying in Port Douglas instead, Cairns or Port Douglas explains what its boats do differently.
What Ocean Freedom Passengers Say
"What an awesome day!! The crew were amazing, so friendly, nothing was an issue, and saw to it that our day was an unforgettable experience. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to head out to the reef"
"Great crew. I couldn't be more happy with the choice and the day out on the water."
"I have nothing but praise for this excursion. The boat was clean and the ride was smooth (we did get lucky with pristine weather). We got to see all kinds of wildlife from a wide array of fish, a couple of sea turtles, giant clams, nudibranchs and, of course, coral. The provided lunch was delicious. It took me a little bit to get my brain to accept breathing underwater, but our scuba instructor, Marie, was kind and supportive and I ended up having a wonderful experience. All of the staff was extraordinarily friendly and helpful. During the snorkeling sessions, staff gave us information about the animals we were seeing (for those who stayed close enough to them to hear, though we also had the option to explore a bit, within reason, on our own). Obviously they can't talk to you during the scuba sessions, but I was able to ask questions about what I had seen afterward. The fish feeding session at the end was also a fun way to cap off the day."
"The booking process thru Book your guide is flawless. The tour meeting point is at the Fleet terminal. The crew is exceptional. The glass bottom boat ride is the first activity followed by snorkeling and scuba pre and post lunch. The crew is exceptional ésp John. Very patient and considerate. We really did not have the food due to sea sickness and bad weather. Would unhestatingly recommend this operator"
"We loved our trip to the outer reef to snorkel and scuba dive. The boat was great, the staff was great, the reef was beautiful. The staff was really helpful and kind. They explained everything really well and helped everyone onboard to have a great experience."
"We had a wonderful day. Everything was perfect: food, drinks. All the staff were very friendly and helpful 👍 We had enough time for snorkeling. We would recommend the tour to everyone."
"We had an amazing day onboard and in the water! The crew is wonderful! They all genuinely want you to have a great experience!! The food was amazing! Definitely will choose this trip again with them!!"

Frequently Asked Questions
What people ask about reef tours from Cairns: prices, the outer reef, travel time and which day to book.
For most first visits, a full-day outer reef trip that visits two sites. Ocean Freedom's Outer and Coral Cay cruise (4.8 from 1,637 reviews, from US$203) gives you about six hours at Upolu Reef and Upolu Cay with a guided drift snorkel; Passions of Paradise's sailing catamaran (4.8 from 3,913, from US$193) is the most reviewed day boat in Cairns. If you have half a day, Reef Adventures' four-hour snorkel trip from US$126. Three kinds of reef day compared
Cairns has far more boats, the widest price range and the easiest logistics if you are staying in the city; most outer reef boats leave from Marlin Marina in the centre. Port Douglas, about an hour north, has fewer and often smaller boats, closer to the Agincourt ribbon reefs, and some of the best-rated trips on the reef. Choose by where you are staying rather than by the reef: both reach good outer reef sites. Cairns or Port Douglas compared
Checked October 2026 on GetYourGuide, per adult in US dollars: about US$79 for a Green Island day, US$126 to US$147 for a half-day outer reef snorkel, US$179 to US$216 for a full day at two or three outer reef sites, and about US$201 to US$229 for a pontoon day. Scenic flights start at about US$140. Add the reef's Environmental Management Charge, which some operators include and others collect at check-in. Every price rung
Yes, Cairns is the main gateway. The outer reef sites the day boats use, such as Upolu, Moore, Norman, Saxon and Hastings reefs, are about 90 minutes away on a fast catamaran, and Green Island and Fitzroy Island, which have their own fringing reefs, are about 45 minutes by ferry. Most boats leave from Marlin Marina and the Reef Fleet Terminal at 1 Spence Street in the city centre, so you can walk from most hotels.
About 90 minutes each way to the outer reef on the fast boats, and up to two hours on a slower boat or in rough weather. Divers Den and Spirit of Cairns both quote a crossing of up to 90 minutes. The island ferries to Green Island and Fitzroy Island take about 45 minutes. If you get seasick, take a tablet before you board, not once you feel it.
For time on the outer reef, Cairns: more boats, shorter crossings and full days with five or six hours in the water. The Whitsundays are about the islands, with Whitehaven Beach, sailing among 74 islands and Heart Reef, which you can only see from the air. With a week or more, many visitors do both and fly between them; they are more than 600 km apart. Reef trips from Airlie Beach
One full day on an outer reef boat shows you the reef properly, and most visitors book just that. Two days let you add a second, different trip, such as a scenic flight, an island day on Fitzroy or Green Island, or a second boat to different reef sites. Divers and keen snorkellers book liveaboards of two or three days from Cairns, which reach sites the day boats do not.
June to October, the dry season, usually brings the calmest crossings and the best visibility from Cairns, with July and August the busiest because of Australian school holidays. April is good value: warm water, calmer seas than the summer and fewer people. The boats run all year. Month by month
There is no closed season, but December to March is the wet season in Cairns, with more rough days, a cyclone risk and the occasional cancelled trip. Marine stinger season runs roughly November to May, so you wear a full lycra stinger suit in the water, which every boat supplies. If calm water matters most, avoid the wet season; if crowds matter most, avoid July and August.
Yes. The pontoon days are the easiest: Sunlover's Moore Reef pontoon and Reef Magic's pontoon day have a semi-submersible, a glass-bottom boat and an underwater observatory, so you can see the coral without getting in. Boats also lend flotation devices, and many run guided snorkel tours where you hold a ring. A scenic flight is the other dry option. Scenic flights compared
A pontoon day or Green Island suits young children best: calm, shallow water, a ready base and dry ways to see the reef. Sunlover's Moore Reef pontoon has a waterslide and an enclosed area for swimming, and Green Island is 45 minutes away with a beach. Big outer reef days are long, about eight to nine hours, which suits older children better. In Queensland the minimum age for an introductory dive is 12. Outer reef or Green Island
Yes, if you are short of time. Reef Adventures' four-hour trip takes at most 27 guests to the outer reef on a fast boat, three times a day, from US$126, and Pure Snorkelling's five-hour trip from US$147 gives you more than two hours in the water with a marine biologist. You get one site rather than two and less time in the water, but the same outer reef. Snorkelling tours compared
