If you want the most time on the island, the resort’s Fitzroy Flyer is the one: out at 8:00 am, and the last boat leaves the island at 5:00 pm. Sunlover’s early boat gives you about five hours, its 10:10 am boat about four. Fitzroy Island Adventures’ full day sits between them, with up to seven hours, and it is the one most people book, which is why it is the calendar on this page.
What to do with the day
Most of the island is national park, and the tracks start at the resort by the jetty. Queensland Parks’ figures:
- Nudey Beach, 1.2 km return, about 45 minutes. A coral-and-shell beach with coral a metre or two from the sand, the best snorkelling you can walk to. It was once a nude bathing beach; it is not one now.
- Secret Garden, a short rainforest loop of under an hour.
- Lighthouse Road, 3.6 km return, about 2 hours, steep and concreted all the way up to the 1970 lighthouse. In winter, look for humpback whales from the top.
- The Summit Track, the steep climb to the island’s highest point at 269 m, for fit walkers with a long day.
Snorkelling starts at the beach in Welcome Bay, in front of the resort. The headlands at either end are where people see turtles most often. The island is also home to the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, which nurses sick and injured sea turtles; its 30-minute visitor talks cost about A$20, are bought on the island, and Sunlover’s listing says the centre is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
For lunch, the resort has a bar and cafe on Welcome Bay, or pick the picnic box when you book.

The fringing reef off Fitzroy is good for a first snorkel, but it is not the outer reef. If the coral is the reason for your trip, the Cairns reef tours compared lists the boats that go out to it, and outer reef or Green Island explains how an island day differs. Between November and May, wear a stinger suit in the water; the best time to visit has the months.
What Fitzroy Island Day-Trippers Say
"A great day at Fitzroy island. The glass bottom tour was very short. But we did see some corals and fish. In my opinion it could have been slightly longer. The small trails in the rainforest and to the nudy beach was very relaxing."
"Good ferry crossing and snorkeling equipment, but that's it! But Fitzroy Island is definitely worth it :)"
"Great tour and good value for money. Terrific being able to snorkel and swim and see a lot of fish and coral. The glass bottom boat was fun and a very knowledgeable guide/driver. Foxy's Bar was very good with terrific meals and drinks and very friendly staff."
"Great day trip to do when you're in Cairns. The ride there and back was smooth and there was someone going around with a map of the island. She was also there to explain and answer any questions we had and if you wanted to add on anything for the trip. She pointed out the best location for snorkeling and did not disappoint! Saw turtles and fish and the visibility was pretty good. Nudey beach was nice to walk around and sit, take pictures. You can hike to the lighthouse and summit which I highly recommend if you like hiking. It wasn't that far of a hike and the views on the top of the mountain were amazing. There is a cafe for food and drinks."
"No guide with you. Just exploring the island which was pretty amazing! Big walks or let’s say hike to be more appropriate. Stunning views, good for a refreshing swim! Got to meet new people during the day. Loved it!"
"A wonderful island where you can hike and snorkel directly from the beach – just beautiful."
"Magnificent island. Without the crocodiles of Cairns. It's definitely worth it. Very important note: If it's very windy and you don't like bouncing around, don't go. The trip becomes very uncomfortable. From a safety standpoint, we always felt that the crew and the captain were experienced and knew what they were doing. It just becomes a less enjoyable experience. We recommend the company and will come back on days when the sea is calmer."

Frequently Asked Questions
What people ask about a Fitzroy Island day trip: the ferry, prices, snorkelling, turtles and walks.
Yes, and most visitors do. The fast ferries take about 45 minutes from Cairns Marina, and the full-day trips give you five to seven hours on the island: Sunlover's ferry leaves Cairns at 8:45 am or 10:10 am and leaves the island at 3:30 pm, and the resort's Fitzroy Flyer leaves at 8:00 am and comes back from the island at 5:00 pm. That is enough time for one rainforest walk, a swim and a snorkel at Nudey Beach or Welcome Bay. Check today's ferry times
Yes. The 'tours' on Fitzroy Island are mostly a return ferry ticket with optional extras, and once you land you walk, swim and snorkel on your own. Every trip on this page has a transfers-only option; you add snorkel gear, a glass-bottom boat ride or a picnic lunch only if you want them. The island's walking tracks are self-guided and free, since most of the island is national park.
From about US$74 per adult for a return ferry from Cairns on GetYourGuide, checked October 2026: Sunlover's ferry starts around US$74 and Fitzroy Island Adventures' and the resort's Fitzroy Flyer around US$76. On Fitzroy Island Adventures' trips, children aged 4 to 15 pay a child rate and under-4s travel free. Packages with snorkel gear, a glass-bottom boat or lunch cost more, and Sunlover's day that adds the outer reef starts at US$200. The three day trips compared
Yes, if you want an island day rather than a reef day. Fitzroy is a hilly continental island covered in rainforest, so the walks, Nudey Beach and the view from Lighthouse Road are the point, with snorkelling straight off the beach. If your priority is the outer reef's coral and visibility, a reef cruise from Cairns does that better; Sunlover sells a day that does the outer reef in the morning and Fitzroy Island in the afternoon. Cairns reef tours
A full day of five to seven hours on the island is right for most people. The Nudey Beach track is 1.2 km return, about 45 minutes, and Lighthouse Road is 3.6 km return, about 2 hours, by Queensland Parks' figures; add a swim and lunch and the day is full. The half-day trips (about 4 hours in total) suit a short visit or a family with small children. Stay overnight at the resort if you want the Summit Track as well.
Green Island is a small, flat coral cay about 45 minutes from Cairns: a sandy beach, shallow reef and glass-bottom boats, easy with small children. Fitzroy Island is a bigger, hilly island with rainforest tracks, a lighthouse walk and Nudey Beach. For walking and beaches, Fitzroy; for the easiest reef in the shallows, Green Island. Big Cat sells a day that visits both. Green Island explained
Yes. Green sea turtles are often seen by snorkellers off Welcome Bay and the rocky headlands, and the island is home to the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, which nurses sick and injured sea turtles. Its short visitor talks cost about A$20 for roughly 30 minutes, are bought on the island, and Sunlover's listing says the centre is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan the day around it if the turtles are the reason you are going.
Saltwater crocodiles live in Far North Queensland, so the whole region counts as croc country, but sightings around Fitzroy Island's clear water are very rare. Swim at the main beaches and follow any signs and the ferry crew's advice. The bigger everyday hazard in the water between November and May is marine stingers, so wear a stinger suit in that season.
No. Nudey Beach is the island's best-known swimming and snorkelling beach, and it was once used for nude bathing, but it is not a nudist beach today. It is a coral-and-shell beach about 20 minutes' walk through rainforest from the resort, with coral a few metres from the shore, and the walk most day visitors do first. Take water and a hat for the track.
Yes. Fitzroy Island Resort has a bar and cafe overlooking Welcome Bay and Zephyrs restaurant, where Sunlover's reef-and-island day serves its buffet lunch. Most ferry packages also offer a picnic lunch box you choose at booking; Sunlover's standard box is a chicken baguette, a muffin and fruit. Drinks are not included on the ferry-only tickets, so bring water or a card.
Closed-in shoes if you plan to walk (the listings recommend them for the national park tracks), reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, water, swimmers and a towel. Bring snorkel gear or hire it with your ticket, and a stinger suit between November and May. A card covers the cafe and the turtle centre. A dry bag helps on the ferry and the beach walk.
June to October, the dry season, usually brings calmer seas, clearer water and cooler walking weather. From November to May it is hotter, wetter and marine stinger season, when you should wear a stinger suit in the water, but the ferries run all year. In winter, look out for humpback whales from Lighthouse Road. The reef month by month
Yes. The Fitzroy boats leave from Cairns Marina in the city centre, where the Reef Fleet Terminal is at 1 Spence Street, and come back to the marina at the end of the day; your booking names the check-in point and berth. Sunlover's reef-and-island day checks in at its counter inside the terminal. From the Esplanade hotels it is a short walk.
Not directly: the Fitzroy ferries run from Cairns. From Port Douglas you need a transfer of about an hour down the coast to Cairns Marina first, which makes for a long day. If you are staying in Port Douglas, its own boats to the Low Isles give you a similar island-and-reef day from the town. Cairns or Port Douglas
