"We really really enjoyed the experience, everyone was super friendly and helpful. They explained the reefs we flew over and made sure everybody got to see everything. We would do it again at any time."

Is a Scenic Flight Over the Reef Worth It?
What a flight shows you that a boat cannot, what it costs, and when a cruise with a helicopter hop is the better buy.
A scenic flight is worth it if you want to see how big the reef is, if you get seasick, or if you do not swim. It is not a substitute for being in the water. From Cairns, the most-booked option is a 40-minute flight over Green Island, Arlington Reef and the outer cays, rated 4.9 from 3,634 reviews, from US$140 per person, with a window seat for every passenger.
Check dates for the Cairns reef flight
From the water, the reef is a single site at a time. From a few thousand feet you see what the boats cannot show you: the patterns of reef edges and channels, the coral cays with their rings of turquoise, and the open water between them. Most passengers say the same thing in their reviews: it changes how they understand the reef they snorkelled the day before.

Green Island, Arlington Reef, Middle Cay and Oyster Reef from a window seat, with headsets and pilot commentary.

Five hours at two outer reef sites on a 35-metre boat, with a ten-minute helicopter flight at Hastings Reef. More money, but both experiences in one day.

Plane or helicopter?
A fixed-wing plane covers more reef for the money: the Cairns flight reaches the outer cays in 40 minutes, and the Whitsunday flights take in Heart Reef and the islands in about an hour. A helicopter gives you lower, slower views and a more dramatic take-off, but short flights are usually around ten minutes and cost more per minute. The cruise above is the middle path: a full reef day in the water, with a ten-minute helicopter flight built in.
Who should not fly
Weight limits apply on light aircraft: 115 kg per passenger on the Cairns flight and 125 to 130 kg on the Whitsunday flights, per their listings. The Heart Reef flight with the courtesy bus is not suitable for wheelchair users. If cloud is low, operators move or cancel flights; free cancellation on all three options lets you rebook.
Combine it with a day on the water
The best trip for most first visits is a boat day and a flight, not one or the other. If you have two days in Cairns, fly one morning and take a full-day outer reef cruise or a half-day snorkelling trip the next. What each option costs is laid out in Great Barrier Reef tour prices.

"Fantastic activity! Honestly, one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen! This is simply a must-do!"
"The flight was absolutely one of the highlights of my entire trip to Australia. It was simply incredibly beautiful to see the Great Barrier Reef from above. The briefing for the flight was great – a combination of humor, but still with important information about the safety mechanisms. The pilot, Justin, was cool and had no problem with me taking pictures and with him being in one of them."
"They went above and beyond. There was 3 of us in our group and no one else and they still went ahead and we had the whole plane for us!"

Frequently Asked Questions
What people ask about Great Barrier Reef scenic flights: prices, what you see, seats and timing.
It is worth it if you want the view of the reef's scale, are short of time, or would rather not be on a boat. It is not worth it as your only reef experience if you are comfortable in the water, because you never see the coral up close. For most people the best value is a fixed-wing scenic flight, which covers more reef per dollar than a short helicopter hop, or a reef cruise that includes a ten-minute helicopter flight, so you get both in one day.
From Cairns, the most-booked flight lasts about 40 minutes and covers Green Island, Arlington Reef and the outer cays. From Airlie Beach, the Heart Reef flights take about an hour, plus transfers. Short helicopter flights included in reef cruises are around ten minutes.
No. Heart Reef is in the Whitsundays, more than 600 km south of Cairns, and is reached by scenic flights from Airlie Beach or the Whitsunday airports. Cairns flights cover the reefs and cays off Cairns, which have their own heart-shaped features but not the famous Heart Reef.
On GetYourGuide this month the 40-minute Cairns flight starts around US$140 per person, and the one-hour Heart Reef flights from Airlie Beach around US$245 (checked October 2026). A full-day reef cruise with a ten-minute helicopter flight starts around US$295.
Yes. Light aircraft balance their load, so listings set a per-passenger limit: 115 kg on the most-booked Cairns flight and 125 to 130 kg on the Whitsunday flights. Check the listing for your option before you book, and declare your weight accurately when asked.
Scenic flights are weather dependent. If cloud is too low for good views or the wind is too strong, the operator moves or cancels the flight. The options on this page carry free cancellation, so booking early carries little risk, and it helps to leave a spare day in your plans.
Yes. It is the main reason many visitors choose a flight: there is no open-water crossing. Light aircraft can still be bumpy in wind, so if you are sensitive to motion, a morning flight in calm weather is the gentlest option.
