Great Barrier Reef Tour Prices

What Great Barrier Reef tours cost from Cairns, Port Douglas and Airlie Beach: island days, half-day snorkels, outer reef cruises, flights. Checked October 2026.

Updated October 2026

Most Great Barrier Reef day tours cost between about US$75 and US$250 per person (checked October 2026), and what moves you along that range is distance and time: an island inside the reef is cheapest, the outer reef costs more, a full day with lunch more again, and anything in the air sits at the top. The best value for most first visits is a half-day trip that still reaches the outer reef, from US$126 with 1,999 reviews at 4.7.

What is the cheapest way to visit the Great Barrier Reef?

A Green Island day from Cairns. The island is a coral cay in the marine park, 45 minutes from the Cairns terminal, and the fares start below US$80. You snorkel from the beach or look through a glass-bottom boat, and you can spend the rest of the day on the sand. It is the reef at its gentlest rather than at its most spectacular: the coral and the visibility are better on the outer reef.

If you want the outer reef on a budget, the half-day boats are the answer. You give up the lunch and the second site, and keep the clearer water.

What the price includes, and what it does not

Day tours almost always include snorkel gear, a lycra stinger suit in season and at least a snack. Full days add lunch and usually morning and afternoon tea. The extras to check in the listing:

  • Scuba diving. An introductory or certified dive is an add-on on most full-day boats, priced on top of the snorkel fare. Some listings, such as the full-day tour with lunch above, let you choose a dive option at booking.
  • The reef charge. The Australian Government’s Environmental Management Charge is collected by operators: A$8 for a full day and A$4 for a part day when it last rose in April 2024, indexed to inflation since. Some tours include it and some add it at check-in.
  • Photos. Several boats sell underwater photo packages on board; reviewers mention paying extra for them.
  • Transfers. Most Cairns tours start at the Reef Fleet Terminal or Marlin Marina in town. Hotel pickups, where offered, are often an extra.

Is the expensive tour worth it?

Often, yes, but for specific reasons. The higher fares pay for more reef time, a second or third site, a bigger and steadier boat for the crossing, and smaller groups. If you get seasick, a larger catamaran is worth the difference. If you are a confident snorkeller, a third site is. If you have children under six, check the listing first: several half-day boats are not suitable for them, and Green Island or a pontoon day works better.

How much does it cost to dive the Great Barrier Reef?

For a first-time introductory dive, budget on top of a full-day reef fare; the price varies by boat and is shown as an option in the listing rather than as a separate tour. Certified divers can take dedicated dive days, such as the premium snorkel, dive and culture trip from Cairns. Snorkeling vs diving covers which suits you, and the homepage has the full-day boats side by side.

Planning the rest of the trip: the best time to visit guide covers seasons and stingers, and Great Barrier Reef tours from Airlie Beach covers the Whitsundays.
